Das Grundgesetz als Protestort – Resemiotisierung eines Denkmals durch die Letzte Generation als performatives Place-Making
Some of the Last Generation’s actions can be understood as a protest, namely those performed at the Grundgesetz 49 memorial in Berlin’s government district as part of the Last Generation’s repertoire of civil resistance. As a semiotic process, which is carried out by means of resemiotisation, the choice of location can also be identified as contributive to the protest’s meaning. The action has a highly symbolic character, as is typical of civil disobedience. However, a purely semiotic interpretation ignores the performance character that the Place-Making group maintains in all of its protest actions. For this reason, this article argues in favor of expanding the methods of discourse linguistics, urban linguistics and linguistic protest research to include performance analysis.
