Abstract:

Fortification by metal dowels for anchoring in concrete or brickwork structures has been intensively researched for several years. ETAG 001 [1] (superseded by EAD 330232-00-0601 [2]) and DIN EN 1992-4 [3] define various fortification types including their design methods and are valid for dimensioning in concrete and brickwork based anchoring. However, fortification for asphalt based grounds has not been sufficiently researched yet and therefore is not regulated for all possible fields of application. This kind of fortification is already used for restraining and protection systems on asphalt. Permission is only granted for usage without any specific safety requirements. Only intermittent stress is transferable with this method. All anchoring types with significant safety specifications require creating a concrete foundation which is to be used as an appropriate anchoring base. Once again, high expenses and the high amount of work highlight the limits and opportunities of fortifications on asphalt. On this occasion, it does not only concern asphalt as road surfaces, but also asphalt as sealing layers as in systems for handling water-polluting substances. To this extent, fortifications in such systems are difficult, since signs and crash barriers penetrate the existing sealing layer. According to the axiom of concern of the Water Resources Act [4], such systems are to be installed and operated in a way that no substances leak and no waters or grounds are polluted. For this purpose additional verifications and warranties concerning the tightness are required. First of all the impacts on the load-bearing behavior for all relevant fortifications systems is to be researched and a possible inspection program with all relevant load impacts is to be developed. In this context, the fundamental transferability of already existing sets of rules for designing anchoring is to be verified. A modell with a coppled elastic embedded plate and shear-slip in linear-elastic part of the function shall be used to understand the following failure of the system. Further, a detailed consideration concerning the load-bearing behavior by means of finite element analysis shall follow. As a result, this knowledge shall be used to finalize the evaluation for a practical usage and for the development of new capabilities such as the developed self-healing of asphalt. With this scientific work the most unfavorable influencing factors such as temperature, crack formation in anchoring base due to shock load as well as the asphalt’s viscous behavior could be determined through experimental analysis. The possibility to apply anchoring in asphalt with appropriate load heights could be verified when subjected to excessively high temperatures between 40°C and 50°C. The coupled, analytic failure model for bond failure and the breakout cone approximately demonstrate the results of the experimental analysis. That way, the breakout cone’s radius depending on temperature and the displacement in consequence of axial tensile loading could be calculated by means of relations between bonding and displacement (bond failure) as well as elastic bedding (breakout cone). Comprehension of the failure sequences due to loading could be obtained by means of trial design, surveillance during the experiments, analytic modeling as well as the approximation using the finite element method. For the unfavorable influencing factors new approaches were developed. Crack formation due to shock load can be repaired using induction with the fastening elements and offer a new and innovative approach to extend the asphalt’s fortification life cycle. Using reflective layers can diminish high temperatures around the anchoring.
