Abstract:

Besides powder and high-solid coatings waterborne systems are going to replace the solvent coatings which dominated the market in the do-it-yourself sector since decades. Organosilanes are, in an amount necessary for the crosslinking in the applied systems, toxicologically harmless and show a great potential in waterborne acrylate coatings. Therefore silane modified latices were synthesized, with the silane (methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane) in the shell of submicroscopic polymer beads. The kinetic of the reaction was characterized with different silanes in extensive model studies with GPC, MALDI and NMR measurements. The process of filmification and the microstructure of the films were analyzed. The films show in TEM pictures nanoscopic fine, silica-like honeycombed structures, which affect curing. The mechanical behavior of the films was tested with tensile strength measurements in respect of ductility and hardness. Nevertheless the transparency of the coating and the swelling in different solvents was tested.
