Abstract:

In the thesis the use of computer aided modeling and investigation of segments of the world in technology design is investigated from a social science perspective. These methods of “computersimulation” have become a major tool of knowledge production for the development of modern technolgy. It is discussed how in the course of the application of computersimulation, social and material components are linked in a new way when technical systems are designed. The main idea is that the formal models on which every simulation procedure is based have to be “made to come true” through “real” reconfigurations of the surroundings in which the technical systems are embedded that are developed on the base of the models. It is stated that the qualitity of these reconfigurations is determined by the way knowledge is incorporated into the modelling. Three modeling methods (Fuzzy Logic, Artificial Neural Networks and Finite Elements) are investigated in detail to show specific forms of the mutual shaping of social and technical structuring going on in computersimulation. In a special part of the study (chapter 4) visualisations of computersimulation results are analysed as an important part of simulation-specific reconfigurations.
