Abstract: | This thesis presents a comprehensive exploration of Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS), an emergent technology with the potential to transform the landscape of wireless communications. Through the development, characterization, and testing of one of the first RIS prototypes, this research bridges the gap between theoretical potential and practical application. Furthermore, it delves into the economic and environmental implications of RIS technology, demonstrating its potential to significantly reduce the Total Cost of Ownership compared to traditional Base Station technologies while also offering a sustainable alternative for future wireless networks. This work not only highlights the technological advancements and practical solutions provided by RIS but also sets the stage for future research directions, emphasizing the need for continued exploration of its integration into next-generation networks. |
