Abstract:

In the work presented, the combined structural and electrochemical characterization of different carbon-supported binary and ternary anode catalysts for application in polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEMFC) is emphasized. The investigations aim at a better understanding of the apparent correlation between the catalysts structure and their electrocatalytic activity. For this purpose, several Pt-Ru (1:1) catalysts and Pt-Ru-W systems of various stoichiometries were synthesized via different preparation routes, and structurally characterized by a combination of bulk and surface methods, among others X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Subsequently, the resulting electrocatalytic activity of the different catalysts was checked by E/i curves in single fuel cells as well as by using cyclic voltammetry. In addition, a new in-situ XAS set-up has been constructed and installed at the beamline X1 at HASYLAB, Hamburg, in order to pursue changes in the catalyst structure during operation. The differently synthesized catalysts differed mainly in particle size, particle dispersion on the support and the degree of alloy formation. Since the effect of alloy formation on the respective electrocatalytic activity is controversially discussed in the literature so far, the measured catalyst performance was related to the previously determined share of alloyed particles within the catalyst. Thus, surprisingly high activities were found for phase-separated Pt-Ru catalysts applying anode fuels with low methanol- and CO concentrations. Due to the obtained results, completely new perspectives for commercial catalyst development will open up, enabling the cost-efficient production of tailor-made catalysts.
