Abstract:

In addition to the conventional homogeneous catalysis based on organometallic complexes recently the so called organocatalysis has been developed as alternative catalytic strategy. Asymmetric organocatalysts are molecules characterized by a low molecular weight and the lack of a transition metal as active catalytic centre. As in conventional homogeneous catalysis the problem of catalyst separability and thus the catalyst’s recycling remains. Background of the presented study is the synthesis of helically chiral polyisocyanates prepared as sergeant and soldier copolymers bearing alkylic or arylic substituents with phosphane functionalities and their evaluation as organocatalysts. This new class of catalysts should combine function (asymmetric induction, Lewis basicity) and process advantages (easy separability). Two concepts of chirality transfer to the catalytic centre should be investigated. In alkylic polymers – on the one hand – the geminal diaryl effect should be used. In bifunctionally biarylic polymers – on the other hand – tropos biarylic axes should be controlled. Primary target was however the synthesis of the required new phosphaneoxide substituted isocyanate monomers to assume the soldier functionality within the copolymers. Concerning the alkylic isocyanates, the synthesis of a new highly functionalized monomer was successful. The monomer though was proven to be not polymerizable. With regard to the synthesis of phosphane functionalized biarylic isocyanate monomers, a synthesis strategy has been developed creating the second arylic ring de novo via a Diels-Alder type reaction of an acetylene with Danishefsky or Rawal dienes. A mechanistic proposal was developed explaining the creation of two unexpected regioisomers. The new resulting isosocyanates though likewise allowed no polymerization. Albeit the new biaryl units showed an interesting limited rotation around the biaryl axes. The kinetic parameters for this process could be successfully estimated by applying the coalescence method to results of temperature dependent NMR spectroscopy.
