Abstract:	With compilations of readings it is often difficult to determine the common denominator of the various articles, and the title of the present volume alleviates this dilemma only slightly. The editors characterize the articles as being "sociolinguistically oriented", which provides a somewhat clearer, but still fairly wide, range of issues to be discussed. The reader is curious to discover what is awaiting him or her in the eleven contributions which form the body of the volume.
