Abstract:

One of the major tasks of an industrial valve is the defined change of the flow rate. The operating performance can be described as follows. The coefficient of flow indicates the behaviour of the flow rate against the position of the flow restrictor assembly. The difference of pressure between the entrance and the exit side, combined with the reaction forces of the flow, results in a force on the cone, which is important for the design of the actuator and for the opening and closing behaviour of a safety valve. By the transformation of pressure energy into kinetic energy, operating conditions can occur, which limit the operating performance of the valve. For liquids this limit is cavitation and for gases it is the reaching of the speed of sound. Furthermore a considerable increase of flow induced noise occurs. If it is possible to describe these phenomena using computational fluid dynamics, there is a large potential for optimizations. Apart from the possibilities offered by typical CFD-Codes, a big interest exist to research the ability of simplified engineering fluid dynamic codes (EFD) to predict the operating performance of industrial valves. Fluent was chosen as a representative for CFD-Codes, while FloWorks was chosen represents EFD-Codes. To research the suitability of these codes for compressible and for incompressible media, two test plants were build, one for experiments with air and one for experiments with water. To validate the numeric results, systematic experiments with two control-valves and one butterfly-valve where done. Within the used control valves four different kinds of cones were tested. A safety valve was examined only numerically. Within this paper the possibilities and the limitations of CFD and EFD for the prediction of the coefficient of flow, force, cavitation, supersonic flow, velocity profiles and noise level were pointed out. Recommendations on how these effects can be simulated most effectively presented.
