Abstract:

The application of linear helically chiral polymers as basis for orienting media in NMR-spectroscopy allows for the measurement of enantiospecific residual dipolar couplings. Should these polymers be compatible with organic solvents, these media can find use in the RDC-based structure elucidation of small organic molecules. Amongst others, linear poly-(alkyl)isocyanates and polyisocyanides qualify as Mesogenes in lyotropic liquid crystalline systems. In case of polysubstituted monomers, a polymer can be obtained, which itself can be subject to crosslinking reactions. In this study polyisocyanates represent polymers with a low helix inversion barrier while polyisocyanides represent those with a high helix inversion barrier. Firstly the application of two literature known polyisocyanates is depicted. Secondly an improved synthetic protocoll for and the characterization of two known polyisocyanides and the transfer of this improved synthetic protocol to three further previously unreported polyisocyanides, one of which is functionalized for thermoreversible crosslinking, is described. From all six linear polymers lyotropic liquid crystalline phases (LLC-phases) are obtained and the fabrication of the phases, the determination of the decisive characteristics for the application as orienting media as well as the usage itself is described. Based on the results of the investigation of liquid crystalline systems of both of the polyiscyanates and the linear polyisocyanides it is demonstrated, that polymers with a high helix inversion barrier are to be preferred. The orientational properties of LLC-phases of linear polyisocyanides amongst each other are compared using the example of common model analytes. Evidence for a pronounced enantiomer-differentiating ability with a considerably orthogonality of the alignment media is provided.
