Abstract:

The partial widths of the omega meson in vacuum and in cold nuclear matter are studied in the framework of a hadronic model consisting of pions and rho mesons. The first part of this work is dedicated to the lagrangian of the model. The interaction of the rho meson with the pions and the photon is introduced by the gauge principle. Thereby the rho selfenergy receives contributions from the pion cloud. Strong decays of the omega meson in vacuum result from the anomal breaking of the axial U(1)--symmetry. In the second part the selfenergy was evaluated pertubatively up to two loop diagrams. Simultaneously to the explanation of the partial width in the omega --> pi + gamma decay, 57% of the experimental width in the 3--pion channel are obtained by this diagrams. Further calculated semileptonic Dalitz decay widths of the omega meson match with the experimental data. The computation of the microscopic form factor at the omega,rho,pi--vertex permits to draw comparisons with the data from which one can conclude, that there are further contributions from higher order loop diagrams, which must be taken into account. In the last section the hadronic model of the omega meson is applied to cold nuclear matter. Starting from the medium modifications of the rho mesons and pions, the one--loop contribution to the omega selfenergy is calculated. For a omega meson at rest at normal nuclear matter density a width of 60 MeV in the 3--pion channel was obtained. The dependence of the width on the 3--momentum of the omega meson is small and lies in the region of a few MeV. Furthermore there is a fast saturation in this width with increasing nuclear matter density.
