Abstract:

The objective of this work is to demonstrate on the basis of a computer supported collaborative environment in which way auditory displays can be realized and used to support the interaction in future collaborative and hybrid environments. Beyond traditional desktop-computer environments and virtual reality an environment is designate as a hybrid environment if real and virtual properties are integrated in order to create new possibilities for the interaction. The new forms of auditory displays are mainly based on the use of non-speed audio signals. This approach has to be distinguished from others in many respects. The use of the acoustic media is neither only an other communication channel, i.e., a sound track for a movie, nor the sound stimulates a sensory illusion to facilitate the immersion of the user into an alternative reality. Rather, this work presents new concepts and realizations of the augmentation of the interaction with auditory displays (audio augmentation) that exploit, emphasise and augment the hybrid qualities of the environment. The examples and prototypes described in the work verify the appropriate reaction to technological development, to create coherent and plausible interactions in future collaborative and hybrid work environments. The work has two focal points: the augmentation of interaction with auditory displays and applications of digital signal processing on base of standard computers. New approaches and concepts for the human-computer interaction (Sound@Work) are developed. On the base of these approaches prototypes were realized for the roomware components of the i-LAND environment of the Fraunhofer IPSI, Integrated Publication and Information System institute in Darmstadt.
