Abstract: | Transmitting Development provides a comprehensive archive-based historical account of the electrification of East Africa, covering British colonial Kenya, Uganda, and Tanganyika until political independence, and Tanzania until the present day. Departing from the national histories of electricity prevalent in the history of technology, it focuses on the global interconnections and interdependencies in electrification processes. The author argues that electrification in East Africa was shaped by concepts and interests from outside the continent, most notably by ideas of development and the strive for profit. Until today, the agents of transfer of these ideas represent a relatively small subset of international consultants, private investors, and government officials who control and manage many of the most sensitive aspects of infrastructural development. |
