Abstract:

CsCdBr3 is an interesting host crystal for rare earth ions to studying ion-ion interactions and cooperative effects. The crystal lattice consists of chains of face sharing [CdBr6]4- octahedra. They are connected by parallel chains of Cs+ ions. Due to the covalence property of the Cd-Br bond, the [CdBr6]4- octahedron can be considered as molecular complex. The incorporated triply charged rare-earth (RE3+) ions substitute for the Cd2+ ions. They form dominantly RE3+-(Cd2+-vacancy)-RE3+ pairs along the Cd2+ chains due to the necessary charge compensation. In RE3+:CsCdBr3 fast non-radiative relaxations of optical excitations and cooperative up-conversion luminescence are observed. Due to the low maximum phonon frequency of the crystal lattice (~180 cm-1), multiphonon relaxation rates are low. Relaxation processes over larger energy gaps occur mostly via electronic excited states of the host lattice. In the given thesis the results of optical spectroscopy on undoped and RE doped CsCdBr3 crystals are presented and discussed. To obtain first information on the electronic excited states of the lattice, broadband x-ray excitation of luminescence was used. We detected three emission bands: the UV (~26700 cm-1), the yellow (~17800 cm-1), and the red band (~13500 cm-1). The temperature behavior of these emissions was investigated. The activation energy of luminescence quenching was determined as 380 cm-1 and 560 cm-1 for the UV and red emission band, respectively. For the doped crystals in the interval between ~70 K and ~110 K, the intensity of the RE3+ emission increases with rising temperature indicating a thermally activated energy transfer from the lattice to the RE3+ ions. The complete energy level diagram of the electronic states of the lattice was obtained from the excitation spectra of the fluorescence bands by laser and Xe lamp. All observed excitation and emission bands of the crystal could be related to transitions between molecular orbitals of the [CdBr6]4- complex. The influence of lattice imperfections and excitons on the population of RE3+ states was investigated by thermoluminescence (TL) experiments. After x-ray excitation at 4,2 K the TL spectrum of CsCdBr3 consists of one dominant peak at about 90 K. From the initial rise of the TL peak and from isothermal relaxation we determined the activation energy (~1850 cm-1) of the corresponding electron trap. In less perfect crystals additional TL peaks related to the lattice defects were observed. We also studied and analysed the charge transfer and 4f-5d transitions of different trivalent RE ions incorporated in the lattice. From our experimental results and published data the energies of these transitions in CsCdBr3 were estimated for the complete series of RE3+ ions.
