Abstract:

Conceptual knowledge processing combines the aspects of knowledge acquistion, knowledge representation, knowledge inference and communication of knowledge, where the latter describes an important interpersonal argumentation and communication process for an intensional reconstruction and interpretation of knowledge. This communication process is initiated and supported by (labelled) line diagrams derived from the theory of Formal Concept Analysis. Line diagrams are understood as conceptual ordering systems for data structuring. Such line diagrams with their threefold semantics - the mathematical semantics, the logical semantics and the semantics of applications - are especially well suitable for enhancing the interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary communication. That is because line diagrams are based on concepts as basic forms of human thinking and because they represent information with order and logical implications without loss of data. Therefore line diagrams meet the approach of "Allgemeine Wissenschaft" seeking for transperant communication processes and meaningful representations. After giving a philosophical and epistemological context and the mathematical and contextual-logical foundations it is explicated, how line diagrams support human thinking and acting, referring to the semiotics and pragmatics of Charles S. Peirce. Moreover the approaches from communication theories are given to illustrate how data, information and knowledge could be represented in a diagrammatical and effective way, taking also into account the triadic undertanding of signs according to Peirce. To unfold the communicative power of line diagrams it is necessary to layout the diagrams very thouroghly. The rhetorical structures and general critieria for "good" line diagrams give rise to structural, application-centred and applied requirements for the graphical design of line diagrams. A method for learning how to draw good line diagrams is given with the learning game CAPESSIMUS. This game is discussed in the wider context of constructivistic learning environments and the manifold activation of thinking.
