Urban Regeneration through Mobility Enhancement

Abstract

This presentation introduces to principles of designing mobility hubs using case studies including Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Utrecht main station all designed by Benthem Crouwel Architects. It shows how urban design and regeneration can help to improve accessibility of a mobility hub, and how we can observe the inverse effect: To improve accessibility and usability of hubs, often stimulates urban regeneration in the wider neighbourhood.

Speaker’s bio

Marten Wassmann has studied at the Faculties of Architecture at both Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands and Leibniz University of Hannover, Germany, from which he graduated. He joined Benthem Crouwel Architects in 1997 and in 2005 became partner in the firm. Since 2011 he also works as an architect at Benthem Crouwel NACO. Marten Wassmann is a Registered Architect at the Dutch Architects Register (SBA) and a member of the Royal Institute of Dutch Architects (bna).

Due to his own multi-national background, Marten has been involved in most of the firm’s international projects. He has been responsible project architect to a large number of urban, infrastructure, public and commercial projects of significant size and complexity, such as for instance Las Palmas (Rotterdam). At the office, Marten Wassmann heads a specialist team for Sustainable Design, which also comprises certified BREEAM specialists. (BREAAM is the European equivalent to the American LEED Standard). Benthem Crouwel Architects are participant in the Dutch Green Building Council (DGBC) and member of the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB). As of 2008, he is appointed Advisor for the Integral Quality of the Public Realm to the Municipality of Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Marten has given public lectures in The Netherlands and abroad, including Hong Kong (China), Rome (Italy), Cologne, Trier and Wuppertal (Germany), Zurich and Bern (Switzerland) as well as Innsbruck and Tyrol (Austria) and Lund (Sweden).
