Abstract:

The present thesis primarily addresses the preparation and application of three-dimensional metal oxide nanorod architectures based on tungsten trioxide WO3 as electrode material for Li-ion batteries. As starting nanostructured material, the synthesis of the WO3 nanorod architectures was successfully achieved using a template-assisted process. Therefore, a polycarbonate template was vacuum infiltrated by an aqueous solution of ammonium paratungstate as WO3 precursor. The loaded template was dried, followed by template removal in oxygen plasma. The resulting green bodies were calcined, leading to the desired WO3 nanorod architectures as a negative replica of the PC template. The fabrication of a three-dimensional electrode as anode in Li-ion cells was realized, using the WO3 nanorod architectures. This involved the attachment and preservation of the arranged WO3 nanorod structure. In order to achieve this goal, the synthesized WO3 nanorod architectures were infiltrated by an aqueous sucrose solution and carbonized. The material characterization of the resultant binder-free, 3D electrodes confirmed the formation of a nanoscaled composite material comprising of the WO3 nanorods encapsulated by a carbon matrix, without any significant influence on the vertical alignment as well as the dimensions of the WO3 nanorods. The effectiveness of such three-dimensional electrode geometry embedded in the carbon matrix for enhancing the performance of Li-ion cells was clearly demonstrated by galvanostatic cycling of the WO3/C composite material. In particular, discharge capacities of 559 and 447 mAh/g were obtained after 20 and 50 cycles, respectively, exceeding the theoretical capacity of graphite (372 mAh/g) and approaching 81-65 % of the theoretically predicted capacity of WO3 (693 mAh/g). Taking into account that the capacity contributions from the carbon matrix is minimal and neglecting its weight to determine the capacity of the WO3/C composite, capacities equal to the theoretical capacity of WO3 were achieved, which dropped down to only 81 % of the theoretical capacity of WO3 after 50 cycles (559 mAh/g). In comparison with general traditional approaches, the achieved capacities are the one of the highest values for one-dimensional WO3 nanorods in monoclinic phase. So, the successful generation and efficiency of a three-dimensional electrode based on vertically aligned WO3 nanorod architectures is confirmed. In the subsequent part of this thesis, the cycling behavior of a Li-ion full cell consisting of the WO3/C composite material as an anode and LiCoO2 as cathode was investigated. By performing a pre-lithiation of the WO3/C composite material as pre-conditioning step, the high consumption of Li-ions for the formation of the SEI on the WO3/C anode could be compensated during the first few charge-discharge cycles. As a result, capacities as high as 121-94 mAh/g were obtained within the first 20 cycles, exceeding the capacity of a full cell without pre-lithiated anode by up to 100 %. Finally, the developed template-assisted process and the binder-free preparation of three-dimensional electrodes were transferred to molybdenum trioxide MoO3. The employed electrode preparation technique resulted in a MoOx/C composite material, whose electrochemical characterizations demonstrated the enormous beneficial effect of the carbon matrix around the metal oxide nanorods as well. Thus, capacities in the range of 750-850 mAh/g within the first 60 cycles for the MoOx/C composite were achieved, matching that of the theoretical capacity of MoO2 (838 mAh/g) and other molybdenum oxides known from existing literature. The last part of this thesis addresses the electrochemical characterization of binder-free prepared carbon nanohorns as anode material for Li-ion batteries. After 200 cycles a capacity of 317 mAh/g for modified CNHs is obtained, which is more than twice that of native CNHs.
