Many technical processes depend on geometry recognition. This may result from styling processes, FEA calculations, or casting parts. Current geometry recognition algorithms are face bound for point clouds, and face or volume bound for the reconstruction of 2D technical drawings. There do not exist any algorithms to reconstruct volumes directly out of point clouds. This paper addresses this problem. It introduces an algorithm to detect volumes out of point clouds. The described algorithm is based on a volume bound algorithm of Chen an Perng, which is used to reconstruct volume based models from 2D technical drawings.
