Abstract: | Electronic exams come with several challenges because processes that surround paper-based exams cannot be transferred simply to a digital environment without making changes. These changes include making sure that the person taking the exam is the one who is supposed to. Paper-based exams often include a manual identity verification process consisting of people cross-checking government-issued identification cards, student identity cards, and faces. Applying this process to electronic exams can be done in various ways. However, these might rely on third-party software not necessarily optimized for this use case. This thesis introduces a queue-based web service for an electronic exam platform. The service allows examinees to participate in WebRTC-powered video calls for identity verification. Supervisors can validate and approve existing metadata or identity-related documents like identification papers or portraits. Using a queuing model, an accurate estimation of expected average waiting times for appointments is provided for an enhanced user experience. After the implementation, an evaluation via a user study highlighted its high overall usability and room for improvements. Following the evaluation results, the final work is an innovative extension for a web service that is cross-browser compatible, self-hostable, and non-proprietary. |
