Abstract:

Acrylic acid is one of the most important intermediates and is industrially produced in a two-step process starting from propylene. The process conditions and the employed heterogeneous catalysts are optimised but the reaction is not well understood. The composition of the complex solids and the feed composition, especially the content of water, have great influence on the reaction. In the oxydehydration of propylene one molecule of water per molecule of acrolein is produced. In the second step acrolein is oxidised to acrylic acid. How and why the presence of steam influences the selective oxidation of acrolein to acrylic acid was investigated in this work using several transient techniques (CPReactions, TPReactions, TPR, TPO, SSITKA). Based on the mechanistic details gained from the experiments and supported by numeric modelling a model was developed to describe the influence of water. The presence of water results in the formation of hydroxyl groups on the catalyst surface. These hydroxyl groups are able to adsorb acrolein by forming an acetal which reacts to acrylic acid. Futhermore, the acrylic acid precursor on the catalyst surface is replaced by water. Hence, in the presence of water the conversion of acrolein starts at considerably lower temperatures and the selectivity is dramatically increased. Instead of 70 % a yield of 90 % is achieved on the employed Mo/V/W-model catalysts in the presence of water.
