Abstract:

Adhesive joints are increasingly used in structural engineering due to their broad field of application and the actual technological development regarding precise application-oriented adhesive manufacturing. Hence, adhesive joints can be found in various applications predominantly in lightweight constructions for assembling similar or dissimilar structural elements. However, there are some concerns regarding the use of adhesive joints in load-bearing structures due to their complex mechanical behaviour and the various possible failure modes. Efficient stress and deformation analysis tools as well as failure load predictions are subjects of current research.

The goal of the work is the development of analytical and semi-analytical methods that allow for an analysis of the load transfer as well as the load-bearing behaviour of adhesive joints. First, the required theoretical fundamentals of the theory of elasticity and plasticity, mechanics of laminates, strength theory as well as fracture mechanics are outlined. Subsequently, an overview of the state of the art regarding adhesive joints is given. In addition to an outline on possible failure modes and measures of improvement regarding design, analysis methods for the load-transfer in adhesive joints are presented. Here, the differences of the approaches regarding brittle and ductile adhesives are addressed and a summary on methods for the analysis of functionally graded adhesives are given. The most frequently used failure models for adhesive joints are introduced and thoroughly discussed.

The core of the work is the proposition of a general approach for the analysis of the load transfer in adhesive joints with brittle, ductile as well as functionally graded adhesives that is applicable to arbitrarily shaped lap joints characterized by a single overlap. For brittle as well as for functionally graded adhesives analytical solutions of the underlying differential equation system are depicted. In case of ductile adhesives non-linear differential equations are derived and solved using a finite difference scheme. The resulting stress fields are thoroughly compared to numerical reference solutions for a vast number of adhesive joint configurations. A high approximation quality is achieved in all cases. Comprehensive studies regarding the impact of the grading profile and the maximum occuring stiffness ratio allow for providing recommendations for the engineer concerning the design of functionally graded adhesive joints. An efficient optimization routine for determining the best possible grading profile regarding a pre-defined target function is presented and illustrated with a few examplary joint configurations. In case of ductile adhesives the influence of the stress-strain curve approximation as well as the equivalent stress are analyzed.

An efficient implementation of the coupled stress and energy criterion in the framework of finite fracture mechanics is used for the failure analysis of joints with brittle adhesives. The presented procedure allows for the evaluation of failure loads in a very short time. In addition, a dimensionless brittleness number is introduced for investigating the validity limits of the approach. For the strength assessment of ductile adhesive joints implementations of the most commonly used failure criteria as e.g., the concept of globaly yielding or criteria based on the J-integral as a fracture parameter are introduced and discussed. Thorough comparative studies with a large number of experimentally determined failure loads reveal the excellent quality of the failure load predictions. In case of ductile adhesives criteria based on the J-integral provide the best strength predictions. Numerical reference solutions with cohesive zone models are additionally used for the validation of the presented failure model for brittle adhesives joints. It becomes evident that the presented approach gives conservative joint strength predictions in all cases and correctly covers the impact of geometrical parameters on the failure load.
