Abstract:

Alternative AbstractLanguage

CsCdBr3 is composed of 1-dimensional chains of facesharing [CdBr6]4- octaheder being connected by parallel Cs+-chains. The [CdBr6]4- octaheder constitutes a quasimolecules whose electronic energy terms can be determined by the molecular orbitals, theoretical calculations of the bandstructure, and measurements of the excitation and fluorescence spectra of the undoped CsCdBr3. Doping with the trivalent rare earth ions (RE) Tm and Ho leads predominantly to the building of the energetically preferrred symmetrical pair site Cd2+ - RE3+ - (Cd-vacancy) - RE3+ - Cd2+ . A comparison of the electronic energy levels of the rare earth ions and of the undoped CsCdBr3 shows that the resonance in energy of a few excited states of the host-crystal and of the RE3+ ions leads to mixed states of those two. This has a very strong effect on the fluorescence dynamics of the RE-ions. The energy transfer observed in timeresolved fluorescence measurements by excitation of the Tm-1G4-level, the Tm-1D2-level, and of the Tm-3F3x3F3-level cannot be explained anymore by a phonon-assisted energy-transfer between RE-ion-energy-levels. The observed transfer and relaxation rates are in the 100ns-2µs range and hence cannot be related to lifetimes of the corresponding rare earth ion levels. A possible explanation can be given taking into account the mixed states composed of the host lattice states and the rare earth ion states. This would allow for a fast relaxation of the host-lattice part (also optical inactive states) and a succeding fast and efficient energy transfer to the rare earth ion states. This thesis provides the theoretical conclusions as well as the spectroscopic experimental investigations and analysis of the undoped and Tm- and Tm-Ho-doped CsCdBr3.
