Abstract:

Alternative AbstractLanguage

Product design with a focus on function integration offers a high potential for the realisation of innovative products due to functional benefits and lower costs. Especially a comprehensive consideration of both functional and manufacturing aspects opens possibilities for increasing the product's functionality and reducing manufacturing and assembly costs at the same time. Existing tools and methods mainly provide design examples and guidelines for specific product functions or manufacturing technologies. The dissertation introduces a novel technology-driven approach that allows the consideration of any product function and any manufacturing technology. Novel tools help expanding the solution space with solutions that are characterised by a high degree of integration. The degree of integration depends on the product's function structure, construction structure and the amount of necessary manufacturing technologies that are needed for its physical realisation. A high degree of integration correlates with a high customer benefit and low necessary manufacturing efforts. Starting point for the development of suitable tools for function integration is a differentiated understanding of the term function integration that considers aspects of product functions and manufacturing technologies at the same time. Product and process models are utilised to develop strategies for supporting a stepwise increase of the degree of integration. The utilised models are compatible with the underlying models of a Design Pattern Matrix (DPM). With the help of a DPM generally applicable function carriers can be linked with manufacturing-induced design elements, resulting in the development of manufacturing-integrated solution elements. Combining these solution elements leads to new product solutions with a high degree of integration. Working with the DPM allows the identification of additional and so far untapped possibilities to realise product functions. The DPM not only opens up new perspectives for the development of completely new products but also for the advancement of already proven solutions. The introduced development approach is evaluated by utilising a procedure tailored to the DPM for different product functions and manufacturing technologies, verifying the general applicability of the approach.
