Abstract:

The main focus of this work was the synthesis of polystyrene-grafted silicon substrates using surface-initiated anionic polymerisation. Primarily adequate methods had to be worked out to enable the anionic polymerisation starting from the surface of flat silicon wafers and spherical silica particles. Another important aspect is the analysis of the grafted polymer chains on the surface. In the case of polystyrene-grafted silicon wafers the methods of contact angle measurement and ellipsometry were applied. An estimation of the molecular weight and grafting density could be enabled by AFM measurements. The molecular weight of polystyrene-grafted silica particles could be determined by SEC after cleaving the chains from the surface. In combination with TGA, DLS, SAXS and SANS measurements the grafting density of the surface anchored polymers could be obtained.
