Abstract:

This work describes a general synthesis method for crystalline nanoscale borides and structural analysis of some binary and ternary boride nanoparticles. First row transition metal borides were chosen as object of investigation. In addition to the synthesis of binary borides (TiB2, VB2, CrB2, MnB, FeB, CoB and Ni3B) in organic solution the synthesis of ternary borides ((Co1-xFex)2B and (Co1-yNiy)2B) in aqueous solution was investigated by x-ray crystallography. Of the binary borides CrB2, MnB and CoB were not obtained by any bottom-up synthesis method before. Magnetic behavior of nanoscale CrB2 differs from bulk CrB2. No anti-ferromagnetic transition was detected, albeit a Curie-Weiss constant of 900.5 ± 6 K. The obtained MnB crystallized in the low-temperature modification with CrB structure type; now called α-MnB. The structure of the nanoparticles exhibits stacking faults. The phase transition (α'-MnB to β-MnB (FeB structure type)) was determined with DSC and XRD to ca. 1250 °C. The magnetic characterization of nanoscale α'-MnB showed a decreased saturation magnetization of 80 Am²/kg at 100 K compared to β-MnB. Slight differences in Mn-Mn distances between both phases could be responsible for this difference. The structural analysis of nanoscale ternary borides synthesized by co-precipitation demonstrates the incorporation of Ni or Fe in Co2B nanoparticles. Electrochemical analysis of nanoscale Co2B and (Co0.7Fe0.3)2B indicates these materials as catalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) of electrochemical water-splitting. (Co0.7Fe0.3)2B is comparable to noble metal oxide catalysts with an overpotential of 1.56 V (η=0.33 V) at 10 mA/cm2 in 1 M KOH solution and an onset potential of ~1.5 V. Furthermore single crystals of (Co1-xFex)2B were obtained by chemical transport.
