Abstract:

Cage molecules were studied in the present work by methods of modern electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). As a function of the structure it is possible to store guest molecules reversibly or irreversibly inside this molecules. The structure of a copper hemi-carcerand was identified by modern methods of EPR spectroscopy. Therby, the site symmetry of the copper ion and its directly coordinated ligands have been studied by the continous wave (c.w.) and the 2-pulse echo technique. For the characterization and distance estimation of adjacent hydrogen atoms electron nuclear double resonance (ENDOR) and nuclear modulation experiments like ESEEM (electron spin echo envelope modulation) and HYSCORE (hyperfine sublevel correlation experiment) were applied. Also, a coordination of the copper ion by solvent molecules was resolved. Finally, all EPR results were compared to an optimized structure revealed by density functional theory (DFT). In an additional part of this work endohedral fullerenes and carbon nanotubes have been investigated. The irreversible capture of atomic nitrogen inside a fullerene cage allows this endohedral fullerene to be capable as a spin probe. By incorporation of these endoheral fullerenes into carbon nanotubes interactions were observed.
