Abstract:

Sustainability as a buzzword is a great deal of public attention. Whether emissions scandal, green electricity or speculation with food, sustainability is like no other subject present in the media. It has become a symbol of the good conscience of mankind. The motivation of this work is grounded in the diffuse public and scientific understanding of sustainability. It prevents a practical application of the designing of sustainable products. Prior research has shown that normally the idea of sustainability is only formally mentioned in the design research. A consideration of the integrative economic, ecological and social sustainability is not taking place. For the first time this work develops an in models and procedures consistent and evaluated methodology, based on environmental, economic and social sciences with taking the design research’s framework conditions into account. Based on the in the literature and the state of art available methodologies an universal, applicable and consistent methodology to support the design of sustainable products is developed. Consistent to standards and guidelines a partial model of the technosphere considers the extended responsibility of the product designers compared to existing partial models of the product life. Analog to the Concept of the Integrated Product and Process Development during the design of sustainable products transformation systems of the technosphere are anticipated and influenced by the decisions on the properties of the product. The decisions on the properties carried out with regard to the fulfillment of classical requirements and the effect on the dimensions of sustainability, which are concretized on sustainability spheres as subsystems. To analyze the effect of the anticipated technosphere on the sustainability spheres a partial model to individualize the economic, ecological and social sustainability Category Indicator Results is provided for each sphere. This is done in consistency with the LCA. For an adequate application of the developed methodology an operationalized computer based tool is provided. Already individualized and implemented transformation of the technosphere by specific sizes can be reused. This tool has been applied to a fictitious example of sustainability accounting of the utilization of cutting waste of a production of a frame for vehicle doors as a reference in comparison to the alternative use of the same cutting waste without using casting processes. Based on this example an application evaluation as well as an access evaluation by the Design Research Methodology has been done.
