Abstract:

The pertinent question of this work is: How was it possible that a Jewish banking house could survive six years under Nazi rule and with relatively good economic success. Considering the Nazi ideology, you would expect that they would have been exposed to the upmost reprisals from the leaders of Nazi Germany; however the opposite was the case.

The initial hypothesis highlights that due to the tight economic and social networking of the bank, its owners were able to prevent an "Aryanization" or even liquidation. Essential for Bankhaus H. Aufhäuser was to be the connection to foreign banks, in particular in the City of London. Furthermore the relevance of the national linkages of the Bank for the hesitant policy of the National Socialist leadership is to be examined.

As a methodological and analytical guide network analysis is used in connection with the capital sorts defined by Pierre Bourdieu. Since 1934, as a result of personal and politically motivated attacks against Bankhaus H. Aufhäuser, the senior partner of the Bank, Martin Aufhäuser, developed a defensive strategy based upon his network: To transform the Jewish private bank into a widely "Aryan" enterprise. After the failure of this attempt, he tried in 1938 to transfer the bank by still holding a participating interest and exerting influence.
