Abstract:

According to the present understanding, absorption of ultra short laser pulse in noble gas clusters occur in two phases. At the beginning the electron density is super critical with respect to laser frequency. Collisional absroption dominates and mainly the electrons are heated. As a consequence, the electrons expand and their density decreases. Since the plasma frequency is proportional to the electron densty, the plasma frequency also decreases. When the decreasing plasma frquency becomes equal to the laser frequency a strong resonant coupling occurs which is the second phase of absorption. In this dissertation two additional mechanisms are presented. First, the collective absorption is extended through the inclusion of non-resonant excitations. Second, it is demonstrated that the cluster core functions as a giant nucleus with respect to electron collisions and enhances the collisional absorption. The non-resonant excitations are studied in the framework of a global dipole model and it is shown that these excitations can lead to heating of electrons upto several keV, which has been already measured in experiments. Further it is shown, that the efficiency calculated within the frame work of global dipole model for conversion of laser energy into harmonics is approximately the same as measured experimentally. Calculated absorption coefficient as a function of peak laser intensity and frequency is very irregular. It is shown, on the basis of calculated Lyapunov exponents that this irregularity is a manifestation of the chaotic behaviour of the global dipole. In addition, it has been demonstrated that a cluster in thermal equilibrium is considerably charged. Electron scattering by the cluster core is studied in detail and it is shown that the large charge of the cluster core (~10000e) leads to significantly large colliosional absorption.
