Abstract:

In this study the electrical and rheological properties of carbon based filler networks in a polymer matrix were investigated. As fillers carbon allotropes with different geometries were used: spherical carbon black (CB), rod-shaped carbon nanotubes (CNT) and disks-shaped graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) and combinations thereof. The morphology of the filler network, which is formed dependent on the thermal and rheological history, was analysed by transmission and scanning electron microscopy. The complex conductivity of the composites was measured by dielectric spectroscopy. It is shown, that the dependence of the conductivity on the filler concentration can be explained by the percolation theory and that the different filler geometries have an influence on the percolation concentration.

By the use of a rheoelectrical method the time dependent electrical conductivity and viscosity were measured in the quiescent polymer melt and during steady shear deformation. It is shown, that the time dependence of the electrical properties of the filler systems can be explained by the agglomeration model. During steady shear and in the quiescent melt stationary values of the conductivity and viscosity were achieved. Their values were used to compare the different filler systems und to validate theoretical predictions. Trough modification of the rheoelectrical method an anisotropic conductivity of GNP composites was found. It could be related to the orientation of the filler particles through the preparation process. This was verified by small angle x-ray scattering.
