Abstract:

In this work it was shown that determination of the composition of copolymers using pyrolysis GC/MS is possible. The agreement with reference data obtained by NMR spectroscopy was good to very good. Linear and cross-linked poly (meth) acrylates have been used for the investigations as well as cross-linked phenol-melamine resins. The microstructure of the (co) polymers, the degree of crosslinking and the pyrolysis temperature were crucial to the accuracy of the results. They have considerable influence on the pyrolysis mechanism and thus on the type and the amount of pyrolysis products. The more similar the structure of the copolymers and the samples used for calibration, the more reliable is the determination of the composition. Pyrolysis GC/MS is a very good alternative method, especially for cross-linked polymers. These polymers are not soluble and thus all analytical methods which require dissolution of the sample cannot be used. Pyrolysis GC/MS, however, allows the analysis of solid samples.
