Abstract:

High efficiency, functionality and quality while at the same time assuring high profitabiltiy are the main requirements of products today. In the field of mechanical engineering these demands are manifest in the application of the principle of light weight structures. But light weight structures often tend to unwanted vibrations or to emit sound. A new quality in the development process is the integration of the smart structure technology. The susceptibilty to vibrations and the tendency to emit sound can be reduced in light weight structures with the help of the smart structures concept. This thesis develops a strategy for the calculation of smart structures in the time domain. This assignment involve modelling mechanical light weight structures, actuators, sensors, control algorithms and fluids. Additionally, the complex interactions between the invidual mechanisms will be modelled. The above steps are necessary to prepare a modular simulation of the entire smart system in the time domain, including the mechanical structure, sensors, actuators and the controller. To minimize the computational effort in transient simulations, modal reduced state space models will be used. The coupling of mechanical structure and fluid is also carried out in the modal space. To model sound radiation of mechanical structures in the acoustical free field, the point source approach is used. A new strategy for modelling thin piezo-ceramic films applied to light weight structures is developed and discussed. Additionally, the interactions between signal conditioning amplifiers and thin piezo-ceramic films are considered. The application of the independent modal space control allows the modal degrees of freedom of the structure to be influenced separately. With the help of the impulse invariant design method, the Positive Position Feedback (PPF) is implemented in combination with the modal separation using digital signal processors. To improve the performance of the PPF-controller, the Anti-Aliasing- and reconstruction filters are considered in the design process of the controller. The time domain simulation makes it possible to consider time varying control laws. For this purpose, an adaptive feed forward algorithm with a filtered error signal (FELMS) is implemented and tested. Three experiments are performed to verify the simulation results of the whole active systems. The numerical calculations and the experimental results correspond very well, taking the simplifications and assumptions into account. Thus, the introduced method is a contribution to the modelling of active structural systems.
