Abstract:

Plastics and polymer blends find versatile use as a substitute of metallic materials and due to the increased safety awareness in our time those plastic materials must be frequently conductive equipped. Plastics are usually non-insulated conductors which can be transformed into conductive materials by adding suitable conductive fillers in the extrusion process. Especially conductive carbon black (CB) types are characterized by their versatility and comparably low costs. Against this background, conductive thermoplastics, polyamides and their blends with different compositions, according to their potential applications as dissipative, shielding or explosion-proof plastics were analyzed. With ternary blends of the type PC-PMMA-SAN the CB leading phase could be arranged particularly filigree to make a ter-continuous and conductive system containing a total amount of CB less than 1wt%. The ternary blends show a clear superiority in terms of achieved conductivity as a function of total CB concentration compared to the binary blends and the pure thermoplastics.
