Abstract:

Piezo stack actuators open up new areas of application increasingly. Besides supersonic and nanopositioning applications the actuators are used for active vibration control. Characteristic for active vibration control applications are high electric fields which are applied to the actuators at frequencies up to several hundred Hertz. Additional adverse environmental conditions, such as high ambient temperatures characterize those application which might cause the damage of actuator. If high electric fields are applied the temperature of the actuators rises due to actuator losses. Consequently the maximum continuous output of the actuator is limited by the maximum allowed intrinsic temperature. In addition the operating behavior of the actuator changes with temperature. These changes of behavior may degrade the performance of active vibration control systems or even cause unstable control loops. Up to now no actuator model exists that covers all the nonlinear effects which are of importance for active vibration control and that predicts the temperature rise of the actuator. Such a model is derived in this thesis. The developed actuator model considers a high numerical efficiency to enable mechatronic complete system simulations. The new model is based on the common linear piezoelectric equations which are derived from thermodynamics. These equations are extended nonlinearly to model the hysteresis effects. To model the hysteresis the classical Preisach hysteresis operator is applied. This operator enables the calculation of the losses which are connected to the modeled hysteresis. Those losses are used as input for a thermal actuator model. The thermal actuator model takes the heat exchange of the actuator with the ambiance into account and predicts the temperature distribution inside the actuator. The average actuator temperature is computed out of the calculated temperature distribution. Then the average temperature is feed back to the piezoelectric actuator model. In addition to the model parameter identification routines are developed which are tested with three different material samples. Beside the model parameters which are required for the piezoelectric model thermal model parameters are identified. During the identification of the thermal model parameters the layered structure of the actuator is taken into account which results in a directional heat conductivity. Finally the developed model is validated with independent experimental data. The thesis concludes with a critical review of the modeling approach and an outlook on future research activities.
