Abstract:

The reaction of phenole with formaldehyde in presence of acid or basic catalysts leads to phenolic resins. These resins consist of complex mixtures of particular substances. It’s problematic to analyse this mixture, so that one objective of this thesis was to use modern analytical methods as MALDI-mass spectrometry. By using MALDI-mass spectrometry, for the first time so called quinone methide endgroups were detected directly in phenolic novolacs. Up to now the detection succeeded just in consequence of chemical reactions. Often phenolic resins are modified with additional compounds. In case of a modification using urea, MALDI-MS unequivocally showed in prepolymers cocondensate structures, consiting of phenole, urea and formaldehyde. Furtheron this thesis deals with the question, whether the concept of combinatorial chemistry is transferable on the development of phenolic resins. For that a simple parallel and reproducible working synthesis appartus was used. The high-throughput-screening consists of a rapid residue monomer analysis, which was developed using high performance liquid chromatography. This synthesis-analysis-concept was verified on the basis of a phenolic resin with wide varied parameters. The results showed, that this concept can also be used in the development of phenolic resins.
