Abstract:

Despite the continuously increasing significance of numerical methods in the course of the design of centrifugal pumps, experimental investigations in appropriate hydraulic test rigs still play an important role within the development process. Consequently, it is necessary to know the relevant fluid characteristics with regard to cavitation such as the contents of dissolved gas and of cavitation nuclei and to apply adequate methods for the metrological acquisition of these parameters.

Based on an in-situ-measuring-device that is used for measuring the tensile strength of liquids, a method was developed for the determination of the concentration of cavitation inducing nuclei in hydraulic test rigs.

The main focus of this work was the development of a method for conducting measurements of the tensile strength by means of the in-situ-measuring-device and subsequently using this measurement data for calculating the size of cavitation nuclei at the inlet of the measuring device. For this purpose a standardised measuring procedure as well as an automatic evaluation process was developed that take into account all relevant technical limitations associated with the measuring principle with particular regard to the detection of cavitation nuclei.

Subsequently, by installing the in-situ-nozzle into the suction line of a centrifugal pump test rig and by varying the hydrodynamic boundary conditions, various series of measurements were conducted which were initially used to verify the operability of the measuring method.

After mounting a second in-situ-nozzle into the pressure line of the same centrifugal pump test rig, numerous series of measurements were conducted in which both in-situ-nozzles were used to carry out simultaneous measurements of the tensile strength and the head drop of the test pump. Finally, the results of these investigations were used to qualitatively determine the influences of the parameters generally varied in connection with cavitation measurements on the nuclei distribution at both measuring positions.
