Ziel der Arbeit ist die Entwicklung von neuartigen, transparenten, schlagfesten Polystyrol-Typen (PS), die mit einem preiswerten Polymerisationsverfahren hergestellt werden sollen. PS selbst ist transparent, aber nicht schlagfest. Schlagzähe Modifikationen des PS existieren, diese sind aber nicht transparent. Das eigentlich wegen seines hohen Brechungsindex hervorragend für den Zukunftsmarkt der optischen Anwendungen geeignete PS spielt deshalb in der Optik bisher praktisch keine Rolle. In diesem Projekt soll ein im Prinzip bekanntes, preiswertes Syntheseverfahren so modifiziert werden, dass die Kautschukdomänen, die im PS die Schlagfestigkeit bewirken, nanoskopisch (NanoHIPS) und damit optisch unsichtbar werden.

The development of a new, transparent and tough polystyrene (PS) by a low cost polymerisation process is the goal of this thesis. PS by itself is transparent, but not tough. Tough modifications of PS exist, but these are not transparent. Despite having a high refractive index and thus a potential use in future optical markets, PS plays no role in the current optical industry. The approach of this project is to modify a common, low cost synthesisprocess to produce rubber domains, which is responsible for the toughness of PS, on a nanoscopical scale (NanoHIPS, nano high impact polystyrene), that the properties of PS turns into transparent, tough PS.
