Abstract:

In the context of the growing awareness of sustainability issues, the knowledge of the realistic life expectancy of a structure or its components gains importance for both, the implementation in life cycle assessments and the planning of maintenance strategies. The following provides a systematic study of factors affecting the service life of parts and components. On the basis of an extensive data collection, empirical data over the lifetime of components and their parameters are collected to identify and quantify the main factors influencing the service life of components, taking into account catalogues of currently used parts and literature on structural damage. Based on these results, a method for specific service life prediction of components is developed including the main factors. Due to the stochastic approach using probability distributions, the specific service life for certain environmental conditions can finally be predicted with a qualitative assessment of seven categories of influence factors. Thus, the building products and components can already be adapted to one another in the planning of buildings in such a way, that the material and energy flows are reduced and the life cycle costs are minimized. The use of components and materials, especially in terms of economic use, can be avoided in the future to achieve a more lifecycle-oriented design.
