Abstract:

The development of numerical codes for computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and computational structural mechanics (CSM) happens rather independent from each other. However, many technical applications are only describable by taking into account the solid and fluid mechanics simultaneously. Therefore, one of the present challenges of numeric is to couple the equations of solid and fluid mechanics. For the prescription of the coupling, it is necessary to understand the mechanism in which way the fluid effects the solid and contrariwise, as well as, how it is possible to model these effects numerically. In the case of a fluid effecting a solid body the applied forces (shear and pressure) lead to a deformation of the structure (e. g. flow around buildings). This rises to a standard problem of CSM. As a technical example the flow around and the deformation of a parabola antenna are presented. In the case of a solid body effecting the flow, represented in this work by a spiral and an InterMIG stirrer, it is more complicated. The deformation or the movement of the solid body leads to a change of the geometry of the fluid domain. This geometrical change leads to a change in the flow behaviour. The case of a fluid-structure-interaction, where both coupling mechanisms exist are represented by a flow meter. From the numerical point of view, it is necessary to update the numerical grid in a suitable way and to formulate the Navier-Stokes equations correspondingly. It is possible to classify these coupled fluid-structure problems into three categories. The first one is, that the deformation or movement of the solid part is so small, that the flow is not crucially effected. This is the easiest case, since no additional grid updates or changes in the Navier-Stokes equations are necessary. The second one is, when the deformation or movement happens in a medium way. This means, that it is possible to update the grid through distortion of grid cells. Then it is necessary, to take the space conservation law into account for the flow equations. And the last one is, that the movement of the solid body becomes so big that it is necessary to re-mesh the computational domain of the fluid. A scheme to solve the problem of the last category is, to define different grid parts which are moving together with the solid object. If the different grid parts move against each other in a periodic or otherwise defined way, it is possible to define an interface between the grid parts and couple them in a suitable manner. This kind of schemes are investigated in this work. It discusses the clicking mesh, deforming mesh and sliding mesh schemes and compares them among each other with regard to accuracy and efficiency. The comparison is done on the base of the flow between two concentric cylinders, where the inner cylinder is rotating against the outer one. It turns out, that the clicking mesh method has the smallest error, however, due to the coupling of spatial and time discretization it is not useable for many technical applications. The sliding mesh and the deforming mesh scheme have no limitation because of such kind of coupling. But the sliding mesh method shows higher efficiency compared to the deforming mesh scheme. So the prediction of the flow field of the two stirrers is done with the clicking mesh method, therefore the flow meter is calculated with the sliding mesh scheme. The simulations are done with the CFD code FASTEST, which bases on the finite volume method. The judgement of the quality of the predictions is done through a comparison of the computed and an experimental determined Newton number. For the laminar spiral stirrer as well as for the turbulent InterMIG stirrer a good agreement of experiment and numeric is achieved. However, some weaknesses are found in the modeling of the turbulent effects of the InterMIG stirrer. The predictions of the wind field around the radio telescope are also done with same CFD code. The additional structural mechanical computations of the deformation of the dish are done with the FEM code ANSYS. Also in this case it can be seen that the major error of the prediction is founded in the turbulence modeling. After the estimation of the numerical error a few wind situations on the antenna are predicted and the resulting deformations of the dish are computed. It turns out, that the construction of the antenna can stand the wind loads. Finally, the flow through a flow meter is computed. For this simulation a 2-d variant of the CFD code was used. Into the SIMPLE algorithm of the code an additional equation is implemented to determine the rotational acceleration and speed of the impeller due to the fluid mechanical forces. These results also show a high accuracy of the numerical prediction of the impeller rotation. Finally, one can say, that all applications with a fluid-structure-coupling are computed with the accuracy of the solutions of each sub-problem. The use of schemes for a dynamic movement of the different numerical grid parts has no significant effect on the accuracy of the common solution.
