Abstract:

This study investigates the flow through an outflow-valve. First the well known flow over a backward-facing-stept is calculated using different turbulence models. The most suitable turbulence model is than used for the calculation of the flow through a so-called reference-valve with a complex geometry. For the experimental verification of the results a new test bed has been designed a built. This test bed allows to measure internal flows at different pressure-ratios and pressure-levels. Using computational fluid dynamics a new outflow-valve is being optimized in this test bed. The parameters of the target-function are maximum mass-flow at the lowest pressure-ratio and minimum torque at the maximum pressure-ratio. The reliability of the simulation and the predicted performance of the new valve are confirmed by experiments.
