Abstract:

Propylene oxide (PO) is an important chemical feedstock for the production of polyurethanes and polyoles. With an annual output of 7.5 million tons worldwide PO belongs to the group of bulk chemicals; its resource-efficient production process is ecologically significant. Over the last decades propylene oxide has been industrially produced either by the chlorohydrin- or by the hydrogen peroxide process. The serious environmental drawbacks of these processes prompted further research for alternatives. Especially the gold catalysed direct oxidation of propylene in the gas phase by means of a mixture of H2/O2 as oxidant has drawn much attention as it results in high PO-selectivities at relatively low temperatures. However, small conversions, low hydrogen efficiencies and a fast catalyst deactivation pose a challenge so far. This study investigates some catalytic aspects of this reaction, specifically the influence of different preparation parameters on the resulting catalytic properties of the Au/TS-1 catalysts which were prepared by deposition-precipitation and coprecipitation. Furthermore the study explores whether the modification of the Au/TS-1 catalysts with a second metal offers the possibility of modifying the electronic and textural properties of the catalysts and thus controlling the reaction as desired. The modification of Au/TS-1 catalysts with cobalt resulted in a strong increase in the formation rate of propylene oxide in the direct gas-phase propylene epoxidation using a H2/O2 mixture as oxidant. A detailed investigation of these Au–Co/TS-1 catalysts by means of ICP, XPS, TEM, microcalorimetry and DRIFTS revealed that this effect is mainly due to the higher gold uptake during deposition–precipitation. Compared to TiO2-supported gold catalysts with similar metal contents, the Au-Co/TS-1 catalysts showed an extraordinary stability in terms of deactivation at a low reaction temperature of 125 °C that has not been reported in literature before.
