Abstract:

In this thesis could be shown, that a new developed actuator is able to suppress the instability phenomenon "Rotating Stall" in a low speed axial compressor in an wide range of the compressor performance map. For that purpose it is neither necessary to detect the so called "Stall precursor" for the use in a control loop, nor it is necessary to waste energy by using bleed-valves to control the stability of the compressor. The new actuator, based on a rotary valve, can be used to act on the flow around the rotor blade directly with high speed, high frequent air pulses. The actuator is mounted in front of the compressor rotor (distance one chord-length). Every blade should be hit by an air pulse once a rotor rotation. The results are examined in dependence of the angle of the air pulses, the pulse frequency, and the velocity of the pulse (supply pressure). It is very important to synchronize the actuator pulse with the rotor blades to achieve the optimal results. To obtain the compressor performance maps pneumatic 5-hole-probes are used at the compressor inlet and behind the rotor. The instationary velocity distributions are measured with hot-wire-probes in the inlet and outlet plane of the compressor rotor. With the actuator it is possible to extend the compressor performance map up to 23 percent refer to the mass flow at the stability limit using 2.5 permil of these mass flow for the actuator with a pressure of 2.5 bar. Furthermore it could be shown, that it is possible to eliminate a fully developed "Rotating Stall", even the compressor is in the former instability region; the compressor recovers its stable operation point without any hysteresis. Thereby the new actuator system can improve the compressor's security and efficiency.
