Abstract:

The digital transformation of the product development process makes long-term digi-tal preservation of product data a necessity. Complex three-dimensional free-form geometry cannot be clearly represented by technical drawings. To cope with these chal-lenges, the LOTAR standard (DIN EN 9300 series) for the digital product model of the aerospace industry was developed. This standard describes methods to translate 3D CAD models from 3D CAD authoring software to qualified 3D CAD models for long-term archiving. The LOTAR method of verification ensures the product data quality of the archive model. The LOTAR validation ensures the consistency with the 3D CAD model in its native data format. However, the LOTAR standard does not provide an optimization of the quality level of the 3D CAD archive models during the archiving process. 3D CAD authoring systems use a hybrid 3D CAD model representation consisting of explicit representations as well as procedural geometry descriptions. The LOTAR standard on the other hand requires explicit CAD geometry information. During the translation process, procedural represented geometry elements of the native data format will be approximated by explicit representations within the archive data format. The approximation tolerance for this process can be specified by the user. This dissertation provides a concept for quality-based long-term archiving which includes a method for the optimization of the quality level of 3D CAD archive models. The quality level is quantified by the LOTAR verification and validation criteria. The developed heuristic optimizes the approximation tolerance of the data translation both in terms of product data quality (LOTAR verification) and accuracy (LOTAR validation) of the archived model. The heuristic consists of an opening procedure and a subsequent local search based on a bisection method. The optimization is terminated as soon as the improvement of the quality level per iteration falls below a predefined value. To ensure the correct assessment of the quality level, an evaluation procedure for the verification and validation criteria used is presented. The evaluation process identifies both the appropriate criteria and appropriate parameters and thresholds for the correct assessment of the quality level. The concept has been validated by archiving 787 3D CAD reference models with the quality-based process developed within this dissertation. For this purpose, the prototypical quality-based archiving assistance system QUBATO was developed.
