Abstract:

In this work, the concentration fluctuations of polymer mixtures of critical and non-critical concentrations were studied near their temperature of demixing by static and dynamic light scattering and by ultrasonic spectroscopy. From the light scattering experiments, the correla-tion function and the diffusion coefficient of the concentration fluctuations were determined, the measurements of the ultrasonic attenuation yielded the characteristic frequency of the fluctuations. An oligomer system of polyethylene glycol (PEG) and polypropylene glycol (PPG) was examined by light scattering measurements in the one- and two-phase region and by ultra-sonic measurements in the one-phase region. A system of polydimethylsiloxane and polyethylmethylsiloxane of higher molecular weights was measured by light scattering in the one-phase region. The results of static and dynamic light scattering measurements of the non-critical mixtures could be described both by the pseudospinodal concept and by the model of parametric equations of state. The analysis of the ultrasonic attenuation of the non-critical mixture of PEG and PPG in the frame of the mean field theory and the pseudospinodal concept was in accordance with the results of the dynamic scaling theory of Ferrell and Bhattacharjee. The results of the light scattering of the mixtures of PEG and PPG and of the phase diagram of this system indicate a building of clusters by intermolecular hydrogen bonds which lead to an effective polydispersity and a higher effective molar mass of the system. This also explains the observed transition from Ising to mean field behavior for this mixture of polymers with relatively low molecular weights.
