Abstract:

The electronic properties of heterofullerenes and endohedral fullerenes were investigated by time resolved EPR techniques. Azafullerenyl radicals C59N· were produced by laser flash photolysis of the (C59N)2 dimer in solution. Using FT-EPR techniques, the C59N· radicals were detected for the the first time with an isotropic hyperfine coupling constant of 10.39(1) MHz and a narrow linewidth of 110(10) kHz. The electron spin polarisation of the radicals observed on a ms scale gives evidence of a photo-excited triplet state precursor. Quantum mechanical calculations of the geometry and spin density distributions of the C59N· radical were also performed. The predicted spin density is mainly located at the nitrogen atom and the carbon atom in a position. Atomic Nitrogen in its quartet ground state can be encapsulated in native C60 und its derivatives of different symmetry. Three nitrogen endohedral fullerenes were studied in solid matrices for a determination of the permanent zero-field-splitting tensors. In solution the lowering of the site symmetry by collision-induced deformations of the fullerene cage apparently leads to a time dependent zero-field-splitting (ZFS) of the quartet spin state. The variance of the ZFS and the correlation time of this interaction is estimated from the absolute values of T1 and T2 .
