Abstract:

Porous organic materials have an enormous variety of potential monomers owing their modular structures. In addition, due to their organic backbone, there is the possibility of simple functionalization with the aid of well-known reactions. Despite, or perhaps because of, their great versatility, not all areas of application for such materials have yet been evaluated. In this work, different porous organic compounds were synthesized, functionalized and investigated for potential applications. The focus was mainly on the isolation of biogenic substances from aqueous fermentation of biomass. In this context, it was shown that a hypercrosslinked polymer (HCP) is able to adsorb lactic acid with a high selectivity. By incorporating fluorobenzene, the HCP was functionalized and thus a change in the polarity of the material was achieved. Such functionalization may be particularly promising for future adsorption applications. Furthermore, the synthesis of an organic polymer from cyclotrimerization (OFC) was optimized and the use of the material for different applications was evaluated. Here, the focus was on the fabrication of semi-permeable mixed-matrix membranes because of the materials narrow pore size distribution. In addition to these studies, a commercially available membrane was successfully used in the pH-dependent separation of various carboxylic acids from glucose solution, demonstrating the high potential of membrane-based separation methods.
