Abstract:

Fullerene cages can be considered as ideal traps for the storage of reactive atoms. The character '@' in the chemical formular N@C60 means that the nitrogen atom is placed inside the cage. The synthesis of N@C60 and N@C70 is described in detail. The nitrogen atom remains unbound and in its quartet ground state (4S3/2) in the center of the fullerene cage at ambient conditions. There is no bonding nor a significant charge transfer to the cage. Since endohedral fullerenes exhibit unique features there is growing demand for their production and purification in high quality and quantity. This work shows how the chromatographic enrichment process can be optimized, for the separation of N@C60 and N@C70 from their respective empty parent compounds. Since fullerene dimers can be considered as first step to fullerene polymers they attract a lot of interest. The formation of C60 dimers with a nitrogen atom in one of the C60 cages is studied. The dimers are produced by ball milling of a mixture of N@C60 with C60 and a suitable additive. The products are purified by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and identified by UV/Vis and IR spectroscopy. Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) measurements show that nitrogen remains in C60 during the dimerization and keeps its atomic configuration. A slight deformation of the electron shell reflecting the distortion of the cage is observed. The optimization of the dimer formation is described. A dimer with both cages filled would be of great scientific interest. Unfortunately its synthesis with the ball milling method requires more highly enriched material then available at present. (N@C60)2 could be used for a Spin-Quantum computer, since it promises addressable quantum-bits and long decoherence times.
