Abstract:

Raney-Nickel-Katalysatoren gewonnen.

Sugar alcohols are mostly used as sugar substitutes in the pharmaceutical and food industry for the production of sugar free or reduced caloric products. Industrially sugar alcohols are produced in the slurry phase by hydrogenation of sugars e.g. glucose, fructose or isomaltulose over supported-Nickel or Raney-Nickel catalysts. These hydrogenation processes are carried out with high activities and selectivities towards sugar alcohols. However, the catalyst activity decreases with reaction time due to leaching of active metal because of the chelating properties of sugar alcohols. An alternative to nickel catalysts are supported ruthenium catalysts which are characterised by lower reaction temperatures and pressures and higher activities. Furthermore, ruthenium is not chelated by sugar alcohols, so that no leaching is occurring in this system. Consequently the time on stream by ruthenium catalysed hydrogenation of sugar is higher than with nickel systems at the same conversion. In this work the hydrogenation of fructose and isomaltulose over supported ruthenium catalysts has been investigated in a batch and a trickle bed reactor. Hereby the experiments were focused on the influence of the support and the reaction temperature on the conversion and selectivity. Moreover, the influence of the reaction conditions on the hydrogenation of isomaltulose in the trickle bed reactor was studied and a kinetic model was proposed from the obtained experimental data for this reaction.
