Abstract:

This thesis deals with the topic of methodical development of and with prototypes. Prototypes are understood to be all images of the product under development, starting with first sketches and analytical calculations, through CAD models, computer-aided simulations and physical geometry patterns, up to fully functional pre-series models. The analysis of the literature regarding the use and development of prototypes shows that the use of prototypes in the product development process as a means to ensure the success of the product is of great importance. In the context of research, the influences of different prototyping variables, for example the use of scaled models or the relaxation of requirements for the prototypical test, are often in the foreground. This results in frameworks and guidelines that help product developers to carry out the strategic planning of the prototyping activities. In general, however, it remains open how the development of the prototypes can be improved. For example, if the determined strategy specifies that a physical functional prototype of an isolated subsystem is to be used at a given point in time, the question arises as to what requirements this prototype must meet so that the information gathered during the examination of the prototype can also be transferred to the product under development. The answer to this question is often largely intuitive and is therefore highly dependent on the experience of the developer. This work therefore contributes to the development of the prototype itself and, similar to the development of products, to making this development more methodical in order to increase both effectiveness and efficiency of prototyping, largely independent of the experience of the developers involved. To achieve this goal, a differentiation of means and ends with regard to prototypes will be carried out, on the basis of which the detailed process model of prototyping will be presented. To further focus on the development of prototypes, the model of holistic product and process development will then be extended by the development of prototypes, thus creating the model of the coordinated prototype, product and process development. Within this model, the clarification of the task as the basis for the upcoming prototype development is given special emphasis, whereupon a method for the determination of requirements for the prototype to be developed is presented with the House of Configurations. This is based on the House of Quality known from product development and relates the functions as well as the possible disturbance variables acting on the functions to the characteristics and properties of the product under development. This enables product developers to define the requirements for the prototype in such a way that its significance is not negatively influenced and therefore the information obtained from the prototype tests can be transferred to the product in development.
