Abstract:

The present thesis deals with the development and validation of a questionnaire for the measurement of emotion regulation strategies in the learning and achievement context for the target group of upper secondary school students. The questionnaire should involve a broad range of strategies, which are used for negative and positive emotions that typically occur in learning and achievement situations. Gross’ (1998) process model of emotion regulation constitutes the central theoretical basis for the construction of the questionnaire. Other theoretical approaches from the field of emotional intelligence were also included. The questionnaire’s reliability and validity were examined within two studies. In the first study the questionnaire was tested on the basis of a sample of 369 upper secondary school students. The questionnaire’s factorial structure, the reliability of its scales and the fitness of the items were inspected, and the questionnaire was abbreviated and revised. Frequencies respectively preferences regarding the strategies were compared. The contrast between regulation frequencies of negative and positive learning and achievement emotions revealed, that negative emotions are regulated more often than positive emotions. In the second study the questionnaire for the measurement of emotion regulation strategies was reemployed in a sample of 100 upper secondary school students. Additionally, positive and negative school-related feeling, academic achievement, school-related self-efficacy, life satisfaction and optimism were surveyed. On the analogy of the first study the questionnaire was analyzed and improved. Preferences, regulation frequencies as well as gender and age differences were examined another time. Emotion regulation could successfully be distinguished from optimism by the investigation of correlations between emotion regulation strategies and optimism. Using multiple regression analysis, the predictive power of emotion regulation strategies regarding positive and negative feeling, achievement, self-efficacy and satisfaction was approved. The discreteness of emotion regulation strategies’ relations to achievement were tested using hierarchical regression analysis: Emotion regulation strategies contributed to the prediction of academic achievement to an extent that exceeds the contribution of positive and negative feeling. The predictability of academic achievement is not moderated by self-efficacy. By twice-analyzing and -revising the questionnaire, an economic and reliable instrument was developed. First results support the questionnaire’s concurrent, incremental and discriminant validity. Functional and dysfunctional strategies were identified. The functional use of emotion regulation strategies can be considered as a resource in the context of academic learning and achievement.
